All-program Express Entry draws to have high scores throughout 2022.
Given the considerable time that had passed between the previous all-program draws and now, high scores were expected. Numerous experts anticipate a minimum score of at least 600 points.
However, the scores are slightly lower than expected. The reason behind the lower-than-expected score was the fewer number of high-scored applicants in the pool. On July 6, there were only 669 candidates with a score of above 600, while 8,773 applicants had a score between 500 to 600.
However, the minimum score required to get the ITA is still significantly higher than what we saw in the last all-program Express Entry draw on December 23rd, 2020. For permanent residency, a candidate needed at least 468 points to be invited.
Our experts expect high scores to continue in upcoming Express Entry draws as the number of candidates with a score of 500 or above has been increasing steadily. After the launch of all-program draws, many applicants around the world are preparing to submit their Express Entry profiles, which will also increase the number of high-scoring candidates in the pool. Yet, we believe the return to pre-Covid cut-off scores is a matter of no more than five to six months.
IRCC to hold NOC-specific Express Entry draws in 2023.
In the first quarter of 2023, IRCC will start to conduct Express Entry draws for candidates based on labour market objectives. These draws will target Express Entry candidates who have work experience in specific National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes.
IRCC is currently consulting with different stakeholders to establish new categories and streams in the Express Entry system and is preparing for technical implementation in the first quarter of 2023. This is good news for Express Entry candidates who have work experience in an in-demand occupation. The IRCC has not provided many details about the upcoming NOC-specific draws but will provide an update as soon as more information is available.
Without the NOC-specific draws, IRCC could not meet Canada’s labour market demands in a fast and efficient way. The NOC-specific draws will help to address this issue by targeting Express Entry candidates who have the skills and experience that are needed in Canada.
Bill C-19, which has received royal assent, gives the immigration minister authority to invite Express Entry candidates based on criteria that support regional economic demands. The Bill will allow IRCC to conduct invitation rounds based on applicants’ occupation, language, or educational level. The new legislation also requires the minister to hold a public consultation and provide parliament with the draw details, including economic objectives, on an annual basis.
What can you do if your CRS score is low?
If you are worried that your CRS score is low, there are a few things you can do to improve your score. One option is to take a language course to improve your proficiency in either English or French.
Another option is to get more work experience in an occupation that is in demand in Canada. You can also try to get a certificate, diploma, or degree from a Canadian institution. Finally, you can explore Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), especially those which are linked with Express Entry. If you have already attempted several ways to improve your CRS score, such as those listed above, getting a nomination from a province is an excellent choice.
Each province and territory in Canada except for Nunavut and Quebec has its PNP, which allows them to nominate candidates for immigration who meet their specific economic needs. When you join the Express Entry pool and qualify for a PNP, you may receive a “Notification of Interest” from a province. You’ll have to apply to the province, and if accepted, you will get a certificate of a provincial nomination, which will boost your CRS score by 600 points and essentially guarantee you an ITA for permanent residence.
Apply even if you have low scores.
Even if your CRS score is not high enough for federal immigration programs, it may still be sufficient for you to be invited by one of Canada’s provinces, which can result in obtaining a Canadian permanent resident visa. Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP) offers three streams tied with Express Entry. The Human Capital Priority is the most prominent among them. This stream invites candidates directly from the Express Entry. Moreover, this stream also targets six IT occupations under the OINP tech draws. The second OINP stream connected to Express Entry is the French-Speaking Skilled Workers stream which targets bilingual candidates in the pool. Finally, the last one is the Skilled Trades stream aimed at those candidates who possess at least nine months of work experience in Ontario in a qualifying trade.
